‘고래(Blue whale)는 거대한 몸집으로 두려움의 대상이 되기도 하지만 꿈과 희망, 따뜻함을 상징하는 동물로 알려져 있다. 깊은 바닷속에서 부드럽게 헤엄치는 고래의 움직임, 고래가 수면 위로 올라왔다 내려갈 때의 물의 파동은 평화롭고 안정적이다. 때로는 위안이 되기도 한다. 카페 블루웨일은 고래의 묵직하고도 평화로운 움직임과 형태에서 영감을 받아 깊은 바닷속을 표류하는 듯한 편안함과 안정감을 주는 동시에 블루웨일만의 철학과 의미를 표현하는 것을 주안점으로 생각하였다. 그리고 깊은 바닷속을 떠오르게 하는 짙고 푸르른 색감과 안정감이 느껴지는 미색을 공간의 주된 컬러로 사용하여 따스함이 느껴지는 공간에 블루웨일 만의 색을 입히고자 하였다.
The blue whale is feared for its gigantic size, but it is also known as an animal that symbolizes dream, hope, and warmth. The movement of whales swimming gently in the deep ocean, and the wave of water as the whale rises and drops on the surface is peaceful, stable, and sometimes comforting.
The cafe Blue Whale was inspired by the heavy and peaceful movements and its form. The main focus was to express the philosophy and meaning of Blue Whale while providing comfort and stability of drifting in the deep ocean. We used deep blue and creamy white to create our unique color that gives warmth and stability of the deep ocean.

오래된 기존 석재 건물 위에 금속의 루버를 덧붙였다. 바다 물결의 파동을 형상화한 휘어진 금속 루버는 점층적으로 높이가 변화한다. 1mm 정도의 높이 차이로 켜켜히 높아지는 섬세한 루버의 변화는 느리게 흘러가는 시간과 파동을 동시에 표현한다. 휘어진 곡선 사이사이로 오래된 건물이 비쳐지듯 보이게 하여 현재의 건물과 자연스럽게 연결되어 보일 수 있도록 함과 동시에 과거의 공간과 현재의 공간이 교차되어 보이도록 하였다.
파사드의 전면과 측면 전체는 막힘없는 통유리로 공간을 개방하였는데 이는 장애인과 비장애인 누구에게나 열려있는 공간이길 바란 의도로 내부로 자연스럽게 발걸음이 이어지도록 하였다.
Metal louvers were attached to the existing old stone buildings. The curved metal louvers that embodies the waves of the sea gradually change in height. The delicate changes in the louver that rises and falls within a single millimeter expresses the slow time and wave. Through the curves, the old building can be seen like a reflection, making it seem naturally connected to the newer building, and at the same time cross-displaying the past and the present.
The entire front and side of the facade have glass walls that naturally guides the footsteps inside, making it a welcoming open space to anyone, disabled or not.

건물의 외벽을 감싸는 금속의 루버는 유선형의 형태로 내부공간까지 이어진다. 이 루버 형태는 공간 전체를 아우르는 완만한 유선형의 형태를 그리는데, 이는 공간 전체의 분위기를 온화하게 감싸준다. 이 금속 루버는 내부와 외부의 연속성을 나타내기도 하며 동시에 공간 전체 분위기를 아우르는 중심적인 역할을 한다.
The metal louver surrounding the outer wall of the building extends to the interior space in a streamlined form. This louver form a gentle streamlined shape that encompasses the entire space, gently embracing the atmosphere. This metal louver also shows the continuity of the interior and exterior, and at the same time, plays a central role in encompassing the entire atmosphere of the space.

홀의 중앙에는 블루 컬러의 유광 에폭시와 천장의 금속과 오브제가 만나 하나의 공간이 형성되는데, 이 공간에는 부드러운 곡선 형태의 소파들을 배치함으로써 자유롭고 편안한 소통이 만들어서 활력이 생기도록 하였다. 천장의 물결형태의 오브제와 물결무늬의 금속은, 수면 위로 호흡하기 위해 떠올랐다가 다시 가라앉는 고래의 상징적인 이미지를 연상케 한다. 천장의 오브제와 바닥의 청량하고 푸르른 컬러감이 천장에 연속적으로 반사됨으로써 깊은 바닷속에 잠겨있는 듯한 편안함과 깊은 안정감을 준다.
At the center of the hall, a blue glossy epoxy, the ceiling metal, and the objet comes together to form a space where soft curve sofas are placed to facilitate free communication that creates vitality. The wavy objet on the ceiling and the wave pattern metals resemble a whale that rises to the surface to catch a breath, then dives back. The cool and bluish color of the objet on the ceiling and the floor are reflected on the ceiling, providing with the comforting, stable sensation of being submerged in the ocean.

카운터의 뒷 벽은 공간 전체가 비춰져 보일 수 있는 미러 재질을 사용하였는데, 미러의 바로 앞에는 그라데이션으로 염색된 블루컬러의 아크릴 루버가 레이어드 되어 공간과 함께 비춰보인다. 이는 천장의 루버가 벽까지 연속적으로 이어지되, 천장 루버와는 또 다른 형태감과 재질적 변형으로 지루하지 않도록 하였다. 블루웨일의 상징적인 컬러를 사용함으로써 깊은 바닷속에서 햇빛이 떨어지는 수면을 바라보는 듯한 모습을 연출하였고, 카운터의 하부에는 직접적으로 바다를 연상시킬 수 있는 바다의 산호석과 모래를 배치하였다.
The wall behind the counter is a reflective surface, showing the entire space in its reflection. In front of the mirror is the blue acrylic louver dyed in gradation, reflected in the mirror as well. The layers of reflection allows the louver on the ceiling be continued to the floor, but with a different texture and material so that it stays interesting. The symbolic color of the Blue Whale provides the sensation of looking at the sunlit surface from deep inside the sea. The lower part of the counter is even decorated with corals and sand.

카페 블루웨일(Blue Whale)은 장애인고용공단의 지원을 받아 만들어지는 장애인 표준사업장이다. 장애인 표준사업장이란, 장애인 공단으로부터 일정 금액의 지원을 받아 직무 활동이 가능하도록 교육받은 장애인들을 고용해 운영하는 업장을 지칭한다. 장애인들에게 실질적인 일자리를 제공하고 비장애인과 장애인이 소통할 수 있는 교류의 기회를 제공하는 것을 주목적으로 기업이 사회적 책임을 갖도록 하는 국가의 따뜻하고 인도적인 정책인 것이다. 블루웨일에는 바리스타 교육을 받은 16명의 발달 장애인이 커피를 내리고 비장애인과 함께 어울려 소통하고 활동한다. 따라서 이 공간은 경제적인 이윤을 추구하는 것을 넘어 사회적인 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 공간이자 다른 어떤 공간보다도 공간을 사용하는 이들을 위한 세심하고 따뜻한 온기가 느껴질 수 있는 공간이 되도록 계획하였다.
Cafe Blue Whale is a standard workplace for the disabled established with the support of the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled. It is a workplace that employs and operates disabled people who are trained with support from the agency. It is a warm and humane policy on the national level that makes companies socially responsible, with the main focus on providing actual jobs for the disabled and the opportunity of communication between the non-disabled and the disabled. At Blue Whale, 16 people with developmental disabilities who are trained as baristas make coffee and blend in with non-disabled to communicate and work. This place is more than just about making profit. It is a place that can make a social statement and was designed to be extra warm place for those in it.

블루웨일은 장애인 법적 규격을 준수해야 하는 공간은 아니지만, 장애인들이 직접 운영하고 사용하는 공간인 만큼 이들을 위한 배려의 요소를 곳곳에 담았다. 출입구의 경사로, 이동 통로의 넉넉한 폭, 화장실의 규격이나 거울의 경사 등은 휠체어를 사용하는 고객을 위한 가장 사소한 배려 중 하나이다. 전체 벽면에 각지는 면이 없도록 모든 모서리를 둥글게 굴려주어 안전하도록 하였고, 모든 가구의 형태 또한 이러한 배려를 기반으로 부드러운 곡선 형태와 둥글림을 기본으로 하였다. 둥글게 다듬어진 소파에는 둥근 형태의 핸드레일을 설치하여 동시에 손을 짚거나 기댈 수 있도록 하는 섬세한 배려를 두었다.
The Blue Whale is not required to abide by the legal standards for the disabled, but nevertheless it contains elements of consideration for them, as it is managed and used by the disabled. The ramp at the entrance, the width of the passageway, the size of the toilet, the angle of the mirror were designed with careful consideration for those in wheelchairs. There is not a single sharp corner on the entire walls, and the furnitures also have round, safe corners to prevent any injuries. On the round sofa, there are round hand rails so one can hold or lean on them.

홀 공간에서의 바다의 잔잔함과 편안함이 은유적으로 표현되었다면, 화장실은 자연의 요소를 더 직접적으로 표현하였다. 천장에 직접 물을 담아 햇빛에 반사된 듯한 물의 일렁거림이 화장실 전체 공간에 은은하게 맺히도록 하여 바닷속에 잠겨있는 듯한 직접적인 경험을 이끌어 내도록 하였다. 남자 화장실에는 밝고 은은한 바다 수면을, 여자 화장실에는 깊은 심해의 느낌을 재질의 차이를 통해 표현하였다.
While the calmness and comfort of the sea were expressed metaphorically in the hall, the elements of nature is more directly expressed in the bathroom. The water in the ceiling creates rippled light patterns on the entire surface, providing a direct sensation of being underwater. Using different materials, the men’s room expresses a bright and soft surface, and the lady’s room expresses a deep ocean.
누구나 꿈을 펼친다는 것은 숭고하고 아름답다. 배려가 깃든 공간에서 일하는 그들의 모습은 어떤 훌륭한 마감이나 디자인 보다도 이 프로젝트에서 추구하고자 했던 궁극적인 모습이자 의미라고 할 수 있다.
Achieving one’s dreams is a noble and a beautiful thing. Watching them work in this considerate space is the representation of the ultimate goal of this project, more meaningful than any fine finish or design.
